I am really liking these posts or at least thinking on who to do them on. The best part about it that I’m really getting into the local music scene. Not that I was unaware of it before but I think artists are taking bigger chances these days and its showing in the quality of work that’s being put out.
I remember first hearing bout Nelson Poket back in the early part of the 2000′s when he was part of the alt rock bank Gonzalez. Coincidentally enough I was looking for some music on the grandaddy of Dominican music blogs, Anivelde.com, and I stumbled upon a video by them for a song called “El Sol Sale Para Todos”, which much to my chagrin I cant seem to find on youtube. This was like no other thing I had seen. It was well made and the song absolutely rocked and it came from DR! Dont get me wrong, there has been many quality bands that have come and gone through the local scene but most of them lacked some key aspects that these guys seemed to establish from the get go: great production and understanding the importance of branding. Both of these were paramount in both video and music. I became a fan right away but never got to see them play live as I was living in the YUESEI and Gonzalez broke up in 2006.
A subsequent stint as a solo artist followed for Nelson and he released some of his best material to date. Today we have yet another incarnation for this modern day troubadour.
Nelson Poket & Los Ex Novios came to fruition with the release of Fulminante in 2010. Channeling their inner Ryan Adams the songs on the album travel a range of emotions and moods that are lacking in much of the music today.
As always, I could go on forever but I’ll let you guys be the judge & show some love on the 31st. Good Music + Good People + Excellent Venue = u cant really go wrong.
